KEEPING FAMILIES TOGETHER
An Act of Love and Justice

On Saturday, August 18, the Dominican Sisters of Houston joined América Para Todos, CRECEN Houston, Alianza Américas, FIRE (Fight for Immigrants and Refugees Everywhere), Living Hope Wheelchair Association, and Fight for 15 Texas at 419 Emancipation, the proposed site for a children’s detention center for a rally with parents who have Temporary Protective Status (TPS) and their US citizen children. As women of faith we stood with them to voice concern over the possibility of separating more families should the parents lose TPS protection.

The consequences of terminating TPS designation would be immediate and profound, jeopardizing the lives of more than 250,000 U.S. citizen children and threatening the sanctity of family unity. 53,800 of these children live in Texas.  Families would be at increased risk of family separation since parents being deported would be faced with taking their children with them and putting them in danger due to the violence or leaving them behind with relatives or in foster care. We I appeal to our government officials to open their ears and hear the cries of the people, to open their eyes and see the good that people with TPS have contributed to our country and to open their hearts to be understanding and show compassion.
