Earth Day Celebration

On Saturday evening, April 21, Dominican Sisters and friends gathered for Evening Prayer and a Labyrinth Walk to celebrate Earth Day.  We often lament what we continue to do Earth and the resources she provides for us. Water polluted with trash and chemicals, the air polluted from the burning of fossil fuels and our very dependence on fossil fuels, the drive that more is better and the waste from single packaging.

This year though having heard the Psalm response from the week’s liturgies, “Let all the Earth sing out to God with joy!”, Sister Ceil focused on the beauty of gifts of creation that God has given us.

The beauty of the morning sky during sunrise, the moon on a clear and sometimes not so clear night, at the green of the budding trees and grass, the vibrant colors blue bonnets and other wild flowers along the bayou, the songs of the birds, the scamper of the squirrels on our property are all sight and wonders to behold.

Wesley Granberg-Michaelson tells us, “Within God’s creation one can discover an order, a wisdom, and a trustworthiness that manifests God’s presence and grace.” We only have to stop and pay attention to be truly aware of God’s presence and grace.

At the heart of this world is this God of life who loves us and is always present to us. God’s love for all of creation constantly calls us to find new ways forward.  As we celebrate how God speaks to us through the beauty of creation, let us respond with reverence and love for all that is. “Let all the Earth sing out to God with joy”
