On Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Sister Donna Pollard,
OP, Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Houston welcomed the family, friends
of Sister Marie Bordages, OP to the celebration of her 75th Jubilee.
In September of 1943, a 17-year-old young woman from
Beaumont named Theresa Catherine Bordages arrived at 6501 Almeda Road. She was
the 8th of 13 children and third of five sisters to enter the
Dominican Sisters is the third to celebrate 75 years as a Dominican Sister of
Houston. Sister Marie attended St.
Anthony Grade School and High School in Beaumont and received her bachelor’s
degree from San Diego College for Women.
Though a lot has happened since the last 75years, one
thing remains constant and that is Sr. Marie’s dedication to serving God as a
Dominican Sister. Sister has ministered in schools in Houston, Nacogdoches,
Orange, Lufkin, Beaumont, Port Arthur and in both Riverside and San Bernardino,
California. She has touched thousands of lives as sister, teacher, driver,
aunt, and friend. Today she known as the
marmalade sister par excellence. Along with volunteers she makes marmalade from
trees on our grounds that descendants from an orange tree that St. Dominic
planted at Santa Sabina in Rome.
Fr. Stephen McCrate, joined by Msgr. Michael Jamail, presided
at our Eucharistic celebration. Following
the homily, Sr. Marie renewed her vows in the hands of Sr. Donna. We continued the celebration in the dining
room with a delicious meal prepared by the dietary staff.
