Sr. Lydia Delgado O.P. entered eternal life on Monday, July 15, 2024. Sr. Lydia was born in San Benito, TX, January 22, 1949, to the late Lorenzo and Maria de la Rosa Delgado. She is survived by her sister, Esmeralda Delgado, and brother Roy Delgado along with other extended family members.
Sr. Lydia entered the Sisters of Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in Houston on September 1, 1980. She began the transfer process to the Dominican Sisters of Houston in 1992. Sr. Lydia earned a B.A. in Religious Education at the University of St. Thomas, Houston; a Certificate in Parish Social Ministry at the Diocese of Galveston-Houston; a Certificate in Preaching, Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, MO; and an M.A. in Social Work, University of Houston.
Sr. Lydia served as School Secretary at St. Theresa School, Office Worker and Conference Coordinator in Social Ministry at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Houston; Director of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry, St. Anthony Cathedral, Beaumont, TX; Director of Social Ministry, and Conference Coordinator, St. Vincent de Paul Village, Houston; Coordinator of Social Services, St. Vincent de Paul Village, Houston; and as Case Manager in the Senior Services Program at Catholic Charities, Houston.
Her congregational service included her ministry as the Vocation Team Director and Co-Director; her work on the Preaching Committee and Discernment Committee; her Hispanic Vocation Ministry; her volunteer Pastoral Ministry at Assumption Parish; her Guatemala Mission appeals; and her ministry as Companion and Advocate for Sisters at St. Dominic Village.
Sr. Lydia enjoyed working with crafts and counted cross-stitch, reading, and going to the movies. She was proficient at making and sharing seasonal ornaments and gifts with her friends. She enjoyed going for walks and being with nature. Sr. Lydia will be remembered for her love of her family, sisters and friends and for being a strong advocate for seniors, with whom she ministered for many years.
Sister’s body will be welcomed at 4 p.m. and the Vigil Service will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at St. Dominic Villa Chapel, 6504 Almeda Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Villa Chapel. Burial is immediately following at Forest Park, Lawndale. In lieu of the usual remembrances, donations may be made to Dominican Sisters of Houston, 6501 Almeda Road, Houston, TX, 77021.
