10/15/12   Our Partners - TCADP

At our Chapter meeting in December 1997, the Dominican Sisters adopted a corporate stance against the death penalty. Recognizing the work being done to raise awareness about the death penalty and the inconsistencies in trying and sentencing practice, we joined the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP). The (TCADP) is a grassroots membership organization comprised of individuals and groups who work to end the death penalty in all cases, everywhere.  TCADP is an inclusive organization composed of human rights activists; crime victims and their families; persons working within the criminal justice system; persons opposed to capital punishment on religious and moral grounds; death row prisoners and their families; and other concerned citizens opposed to capital punishment.
We work with and support the efforts of TCADP both state wide and locally to raise awareness and call for the end of the death penalty.  Our efforts include petitioning the Board of Pardons and Parole and the Governor on behalf of persons scheduled for execution as well as prayer and participating in vigils.  On the evenings of execution our sisters gather in the Villa Chapel at 4:45 p.m. for evening prayers. We pray for the victims, the persons to be executed and their families.  Some of us then join the public vigils from 5:30 p.m.-6:20 p.m. The sites for these vigils rotate every three months.  The Dominican Sisters host the vigil held on the corner of Almeda and Holcombe during the months of October, November and December.
The execution schedule through the end of the year is as follows:
October 18: Anthony Haynes
October 24: Bobby Hines
October 31: Donnie Roberts
November 8: Mario Swain
November 14: Ramon Hernandez
November 15: Preston Hughes
December 12: Rigoberto Avila, Jr.
