Coordinator of Wellbeing and Communal Life
Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Dominican Sisters of Houston (DSOH) seek a candidate for a new position of Coordinator of Wellbeing and Communal Life; DSOH is a community of Catholic women religious who are committed to remaining engaged in furthering their Dominican mission and living their lives fully to the extent of their individual abilities and in relationship with each other. The position of Coordinator of Wellbeing and Communal Life has been created to assist leadership in animating and encouraging all sisters as they live out this commitment. The primary responsibility of the position is to ensure structures exist for promoting individual member wellbeing, the wellbeing of the community, and the engagement of sisters in the life and mission of the congregation.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1882, the DSOH have served Houston, Galveston, the Sabine area and other parts of Texas, California, and Guatemala. The congregation includes more than 50 women religious who live mostly in Houston in either skilled care, assisted living at our retirement home on our main campus, or independently in houses on our main campus and elsewhere. The sisters’ ministries include their two college preparatory schools, teaching, school administration, justice advocacy, and their mission school in Guatemala. The mission of the DSOH is to study and address the crucial justice issues of our time, to preach and teach the Gospel without regard to risk, and to work to transform social structures which oppress the powerless, ministering with them in our common struggle to remain faithful to the Word of God. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Foster an environment within the congregation that emphasizes the importance of personal and communal wellbeing in furthering the life and mission

·         Maintain, strengthen, or develop structures and processes necessary for enhancing the quality of member participation that align with current needs and are adaptable to meet future needs

·         Develop a process and promote opportunities for sisters to engage in conversations about religious and communal life, ongoing formation, spiritual needs, and the future of the mission, recognizing the variety of member abilities, interests, and locations

·         Take a comprehensive and holistic approach to wellbeing across the community and integrate efforts across all residences

·         Assist leadership in integrating the activities and services needed for promoting wellbeing and engagement of members in mission throughout the community

·         Ensure the residential life in all residential settings is in keeping with expectations for a vibrant community life and meet the spiritual, psycho-social, emotional, and physical needs of its occupants during the different stages of the life journey

·         Integrate and enhance the current system for attending to the health and wellness needs of the sisters

·         In collaboration with each individual sister, assess her holistic care needs and determine the appropriate resources and ways to meet these needs

·         Provide referral information for sisters seeking or requiring various types of professional help

·         Ensure activities or services to help meet sisters’ needs for greater wellbeing and quality of life, such as ministry opportunities for sisters in transition to semi or full-time retirement; opportunities with local church, civic community or other relationships; and enrichment opportunities such as sabbaticals, educational programs, hobbies outlets, physical exercise, and various entertainment possibilities

·         Develop and provide orientation processes for sisters entering new community houses

ROLE CHARACTERISTICS

·         Communicates effectively across all settings with sisters, leadership, and staff

·         Communicates and listens well to builds relationships with sisters individually

·         Able to create, modify, and implement structures and programs on a systemic level

·         Exhibits compassion, empathy, patience, leadership skills, initiative, critical thinking, adaptability, problem management strategies, interpersonal skills, and coaching skills

·         Exhibits a positive, approachable, and inviting attitude

·         Works independently as well as collaboratively to create a team environment

·         Helps build morale and a relational culture

·         Understands life stages and issues with the elderly, preferably elderly religious

·         Understands or willing to learn about the Catholic faith and women religious

·         Understands or willing to learn the Dominican mission, charism, and congregational history

QUALIFICATIONS

·         The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree along with proven experience and skills in a similar role and/or ability to demonstrate clear understanding of the role

·         Preferred experience working with the wellbeing needs of an older population

 

POSITION HOURS AND SALARY

·         Reports to Leadership Team

·         Full time position (30 - 40 hours) with hours to be negotiated and flexible

·         Gross annual salary commensurate with education, background, and experience

·         Salary and Benefits:  PTO, 403B retirement plan, long-term disability, medical and dental coverage, Health Savings Account, workers’ compensation, group term life and AD&D insurance, and professional development assistance.
