In 2008, the Dominican Sisters of Houston established the Dominican Family for lay persons to help ensure the future of the Dominican mission and charism of prayer, study, community, and preaching. Lay individuals are invited to learn more about the Dominican mission and charism and to participate in a formation process to become a member of the Dominican Family. More than 150 individuals have participated in the formation process, ultimately committing themselves to lives rooted in the Dominican values. The Dominican Family focuses on learning and working to address justice issues, building community with other family members and the Dominican Sisters, and praying individually and in community. Today, the Dominican Sisters of Houston walk side by side with the Dominican Family promoting the spirit of St. Dominic in a contemporary world through study and action.
Mission Statements
We, the Houston Dominican Sisters, publicly commit ourselves to study and address the crucial justice issues of our times. We assume the risks in inherent in preaching and teaching the Gospel. We will work to transform social structures which oppress the powerless, ministering with them in our common struggle to remain faithful to the Word of God.
We, members of the Dominican Family are called to embody the Dominican charism, seek Truth, preach the word of God, and promote the dignity of all persons. As part of the global Dominican Family, we commit ourselves to lives rooted in prayer, study, community and preaching. Through our gifts of diversity, we strive to grow together as co-creators of justice and peace.
